Beautiful delivery!!! Just short of length drawing the batsmen forward making him to reach out for the drive... Bowled himmmmm!!! Done the batsmen in with an absolute peach of a delivery... Well disguised googly did the trick this time… Well these comments and much more will not be heard anymore with the Legend Kumble calling it quits on Nov 2nd at the Feroz Shah Kotla. It was a shock for the entire Nation as the retirement came much earlier than expected. Relentless, perseverance, impeccable precision …….. All these qualities can be attributed to this humble cricketer who has been a fantastic ambassador for the game of Cricket. Cricket is known as the “Gentlemen’s Game” but, only a few contemporary players know that Cricket carries this tag also with it. Kumble is definitely a great role model for up coming cricketers. He has showed us the right way to go about the game on and off the field. In a career spanning over 18 years, this Gentle Giant has always proved to be a fierce competitor who would be always at you, relentless in his approach, very aggressive but, still without involving in sledging that has almost consumed the modern day cricket.

The Indian Cricket team has done exceedingly well in test matches for the past 8 to 10 years or so. Overseas victories which were nothing more than a dream slowly started to become tangible results. Series victories in England, West Indies, Pakistan and test match victories in Australia, South Africa all were witnessed in the last decade. All materialized purely due to some great contributions from the old horses like Kumble, Sachin, Sourav, Rahul and not to miss out the under-rated VVS. These guys have done yeoman service to Indian and World Cricket. Now that two will be missing from this list is really sad news for any Indian cricket fan. First Sourav and now Anil have decided to hang their boots. These are huge shoes to fill in and I’m supremely confidant that this void created by their departure will not be filled that easily.

“Everything has an end”. True! But the manner in which one gets to retire is worth mentioning. India has always been a myth and will continue to be one, not just for outsiders but also for many of us. This is a land of extremes. One even gets to see someone building a shelter for 8000 crores and at that same time you could also get to see significant proportion of the population living without shelter. The Media in particular can even be termed as The Prophecy .These guys have their own flair of getting things done just for the sake of commercializing their business. Constant pressure on the senior pros regarding their retirement has done no good to these great players who deserve an even better farewell than what we have and what we are about to give them. This era for me is the Golden era of Indian Cricket. This is my personal opinion and I give a damn for those who would want to contradict me. For many sports is all about results and for a few souls it’s all about professionalism, clinical approach, technique and charm. These “fab five” all have stamped their authority on the game with their unique style.

Sourav - the Prince of Kolkata, the God of Offside is by far the most aggressive captain India has witnessed. His entry to the Indian team in the One Day format is not so significant but the way he blasted his way into the pure format of the game is incredible. The sparkling hundred against England on his debut at the Mecca of cricket will always be remembered by many of us. The way he drove the ball on the offside , his square cuts split the gap with utmost precision . It wasn’t a flat deck on which he creamed the bowlers but, it was pretty hostile for batting when he came onto the field for the first time. Overcast conditions, movement on and off the pitch and to compound it England had Mullaly, Tudor and Cork in their ammunition. Sourav established his authority with many great knocks like the 124(if I’m not wrong) against Pakistan in Dhaka, his consecutive four man of the match awards at Toronto , 140 odd at Brisbane , Nat west finals and many more are worth cherishing. He was a natural timer of the cricket ball, his offside play was Godly and the way he transformed the Indian team from a submissive unit to an aggressive outfit was remarkable. He was brutal against spinners and the way he dances down the track and clears the boundary is a sight worth treasuring. He led the team with flair and confidence in the 2003 edition of the World Cup and that would go down in the record books of Indian Cricket. I certainly feel Sourav did not deserve the ill-treatment he got from the spectators, media, the selectors for sure when he was out of the team. He still proved his mettle by making a remarkable comeback and showed that class is permanent and form is temporary. He would always be remembered as someone who would never say die even at the dearth of motivation. A remarkable one day player and an elegant left hander who had his own panache of going about his work .Dada, we’ll miss you for sure.

Now this section is about someone whom I admire and respect so much. Well, it’s no big surprise it’s Anil Kumble. I developed a penchant for his bowling at a very young age. I still remember my school days when I was in fourth or fifth standard and we use to play tennis ball cricket at my friend Abinow’s place in Tatabad. It really is comical to revisit the past when as a kid I was over-ambitious and tried to bowl leg spin with a tennis ball. I admired his approach and his relentless nature. I could see a warrior in him, with a thick moustache and his run up is something that I always try to mock whenever I get a ball in my hand. I never bowled leg spin and never could because; it’s not an easy art. It takes invariable practice, dedication and hard work to master that art. Jumbo as he is rightly called has a real big heart and his career span and records speak for it. Many talk about his perfect 10 as his career best. By no means can I discount that feat but, for me the test match at Antigua where he got hit by a bouncer and broke his lower jaw. No one would have expected him to even be by the boundary ropes but, this great bowler got onto the field and even got the Caribbean prince,Lara out. Even now in his last test where he injured his finger and had eleven stitches on it and still came out and had 3 scalps. He even ran backwards and took a catch in spite of being injured while many in the team dropped sitters. Anil was an underrated cricketer by the media and he made no big fuss about anything. Even when new comers were complaining that they deserved to be the next captain, Anil never spoke a word. This speaks volumes about this man’s character. Respected all over the world’s Cricketing Fraternity he truly is a Legend. Here again, I would like to add that the press played an ugly part towards the fag end of his career. He was not given his due and at the same time he was constantly under pressure questioning his fitness, lack of form and retirement plans. He himself came out openly and stated that he found it difficult to handle two teams when India toured Down Under. Here, by two teams he meant the Aussies and the press team which was always on the lookout for topics apart from cricket. Everything said and done, he still managed to conduct his leadership with élan and a style of his own which has become synonymous with dedication. It really is a sad day for me and I will definitely miss my childhood hero for sure when the Indians adorn the whites for the next time. Hail Jumbo for his contributions to the world cricket.

On The DEFENSIVE

After the tour from Down under, the expectations from the Indian team was on an all time high . Indians, much to the contrary of their reputation won a One Day series in Australia and went overboard in their celebrations. Fair enough! Who would have thought that this Indian side with almost ten players in the starting 11 with an average age of 22 would cause the downfall of the mighty Australians .Suprisingly, the side was without two of their old horses who shared 20,000runs between them and loads of experience to go with it. The Australians had a taste of their own medicine and were reciprocated with the same hostile hospitality that they offered and they found it extremely tough to be on the receiving side. Pretty unusual eh!. So after all the euphoria that clouded the Indian team the stage was set for the South African series at home. A team ranked no:1 vs another aspiring to be the best.
The Chepauk pitch which use to offer a little assistance for the quicker bowlers acted completely different to its reputation. It was a flat deck and there was nothing in it for the bowlers. Anyone who could sight the ball well was able to rewrite his record books. Even the quickest of bowlers were not spared. The match itself proved to be a highlights package and both the teams posted mammoth totals . It was an ugly sight not only for the bowlers but also for the purists of the game. Even a good length delivery was taken toll off. The true test of batsman is how he battles it out on a lively pitch that has atleast a little on offer for the bowlers. The chepauk pitch ruined what was suppose to be a Humdinger of a contest between two good teams in great form.

Pain That Makes Incident's Special

Inspite of the monotonous noise of the fan i felt like sleeping in heaven.
It was 6 '0' clock in the morning and the drizzle continued, the cool breeze(something that u don't often associate with my college )added to my comfort level and I relished that.

My not so healthy mobile sprang up to life with all the energy that it could afford and it's display got stained with bright chrome yellow . A call from Deepak and he asked me to join him for the trek that they had planned for as part of the Eco Club. As always I opted to yield to my drowsiness (to be frank i did not think of any other option ). A couple of minutes later a familiar voice yelled "gowriii, gowriiiii, gowriiiiii" . Its better to save your skin before they blurt out the magic "F" WORD!". I opened the door and a supple figure with an out sized T-shirt and a blue tracks stood before me . I again yielded to my slumber and and again the same person on the phone . Alright, I too got frustrated experiencing the same stuff again and again as u people do reading this post of mine.
I decided to go for the trek and got myself ready in 20 minutes. I jogged to the dining hall intentionally so that the others whom i kept waiting would believe that I wasn't late deliberately . I jumped at the chance of a bike ride and so i joined Saravanan and off we went leading the way for the rest of my club members in the bus. The drizzle had stopped and so did my heart beat for a second. We were riding at 100 Km/Hr . We reached the place and it was en route to Mysore, a place where u would find deers and jumbo's(elephants) often. The teams rallied in front while myself and saravannan had to wait for the forest watcher. We were way behind the others and we had no other option but to lend an ear to the officer's story. We picked up pace and joined the others by the time we entered the interesting part of the trek. A small man made pathway that led to the interior forest where the age old AMMAN Temple is situated. Ten minutes of walk and we heard an elephant trumpet at a distance. We had to pick up pace and cross that area as soon as possible.

After an hour of planning we thought of going upstream and so continued with the trek. It was a completely dried stream on our course and the pebbles and stones were abundant. The rangers were quite concerned of our safety and so was reluctant to carry on with the trek. Fair enough! After all there were twenty odd girls who would do everything but anything sensible if they get to see an animal. So we called off the trek and returned to the same spot where we had our lunch. Our godfather of Eco club came up with an awesome game (The Dog And The Bone) and not surprisingly the girls found it interesting. I aggravated the injury when I got my turn in the game. I decided to pull out and was a mere spectator from then on..

After a few mishaps the game was also called off.

Even The Rain Gods couldn't tolerate our mind-numbing activities and so decided to drive us out of the forests. It started pouring down and we decided to leave.

The EverInteresting Routine

It was 2:30 p.m and the audicity within the so called class room slowly started dropping and it was obvious signs for us to leave the class.Placement and Training to follow and we thought of sticking onto the ritual. The Hostel doors aren't hostile anymore and we have access to our rooms even during the class hours.By the end of the first hour we were in the hostel room hoping that the security would not have switched off the main power supply but, that was not to be. Many have the wrong perception that it is difficult to kill time but i can say with a certain amount of certainity that it is a cake walk for us.....

PLAYING WITH FIRE

I 've offlate developed this very bad habit of choosing titles that does sound big and exaggerating but to be fair enough it does ve some relevance with wat i write. So then, here i am once again in the net centre for the second posting in BLOGSPOT(but i am suppose to be in the lab,coz i ve my internet programming lab now).Myself and a friend of mine (deepak) after weeks of planning and void quantity of execution somehow, got the quiz club into effect yesterday(13-03-08).It really wz tough on our part to convince my fellow college friends and to pull them into the club.We knew that we would ve a torrid time starting the club and to expect a good response from them for quizzing is like asking sreesanth to concede only 3 runs in an over.Around 25 odd people were there for the first session and it comprised of the first year boys and the rest were co-ordinators of the club, there is nothing to be suprised about this infact, this is wat happens everytime any activity is done in my college. We thought atleast the first years would fill in the seminar hall and so we prepared questions for the prelims but ,that wz not to be.We did go on with the quiz and it turned out to be pretty good.We ended the day's session with Karan Thapar's DEVIL"S ADVOCATE and a TED video.Lets see how far it goes...

The Trail Of The Jinx

This is my first post in blog spot and its about cricket(the most easiest and the most familiar topic for any Indian!).I'm not going to adorn the role of a critic of the Indian Cricket team because I don't want to add to the already existing ONE BILLION critic pool.Let me not beat the bush anymore and get on with the topic straightaway.I'm in Computer Applications Department and I play for my Department team and for my college cricket team as well.Every year, the department Of Textile Technology would host an intra-College Cricket tournament. Our department team fares well in cricket(only in Cricket) and we reached the finals for the last five times and we could have ended up reaching the finals for the sixth time as well had we played with a little more common sense. We lost the toss and it was a good toss to loose because we got what we planned for.The Mech's who were our opponent opted to field. As always I opened the batting for my team.We had a steady start and I was tentative initially scoring just the singles and two's keeping aside the big booming cover driver which every conventional opening batsmen would want to play.It was the the third over that stirred up my confidence. The bowler was Ram Mohan and it was a Good Length Delivery,My initial movement was forward because, I wanted to always play forward because of the low bounce that did the batsmen in.That very good length delivery I played off the back-foot on the rise and my body weight going completely into that shot and the best part was that I just middled the ball and not even a punch, there she went through the covers to the boundary ropes. That shot gave me a lot of confidience and I decided I would play my shots if it was there to be hit. Then followed the flurry of boundaries and the best part was that I played within the "V" and that kept my shots on to the ground. The field was altered to stop the runs through the cover region and there wz just one man in front of the wicket on the ON side. The next delivery was again on a good length and I used my wrists to good use and played it on the ON side for a couple.Almost a similar delivery and I bettered my shot and off she went for a boundary in the same area. The run rate was up in a flash and I was sighting the ball very well.I played a beautiful ON DRIVE which is regarded as the most difficult shot to play. The slice over the backward point fetched me another boundary and a few more followed and I was completely exhausted because off the heat that drained my energy completely.I even thought of getting out at one stage but I did not want to commit the same mistake which I always do after getting off to a good start.I played with patience and I reached my HALF-CENTURY in the 8th over.I got out on 52 and scored them off 33 deliveries. It really was a satisfying innings because of the manner in which I scored those runs and my shots were flowing freely and balance was perfect.I was also able to pick the gaps with precision whenever I went for the big shots. The chase was always on and we helped our opponents cause by not bowling to the field set and by conceding too many extras and also because of poor fielding. The match was lost in the last over and our dream of entering into the finals for the sixth time went begging.
